The Last Download

Denote learned to update itself. This is the last release you'll ever install by hand.

  • In-app updates. The update popup's "Get it" button used to send you on a field trip to GitHub: download the DMG, drag, drop, wonder if you did it right. Now it says Download update, fills a tidy azure progress bar right in the popup, and swaps in the new version on the spot. One click, then Restart to update, and you're on the new version before your coffee moves.
  • Too busy? Ignore it. Dismiss the popup mid-download and keep working. The update finishes quietly in the background and installs itself the next time you quit, like elves finishing the shoes overnight.
  • Running Denote straight off the DMG? Bold. The app will gently explain it can't update itself from there and walk you to the download page instead. (Drag it into Applications. It wants to live in Applications.)
  • Reload crash. Reloading the window no longer crashes the app on a duplicate updater handler. It was one line. It is always one line.
  • Errors speak human. Update problems used to surface raw plumbing like net::ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED. Now they say what happened in plain words and keep the plumbing to themselves.
  • No data or file-shape changes to design/*.json. Safe in-place update. One small ceremony: since you're on an older version, this update still arrives the old way. Click Get it, download, drag, drop. Savor it. It's the last time.
